Fireplace inserts
You already have the hole in the wall. An insert is what turns it from something that takes heat out of the house into something that puts heat in.
An insert is a sealed firebox that slides into your existing masonry or factory built fireplace. The chimney gets relined, the unit gets sealed to the opening, and what was an open hole becomes an airtight appliance.
This is usually the single biggest comfort change we can make in an older house, and it is normally a one-day job. The relining is not optional and it is not a place to save money. An insert vented into an oversized masonry flue will not draft properly and will build creosote.

Which one fits your room?
Send the room size and what is there now. We will come back with two or three that suit it, and the price to put one in.
What the differences actually mean
Wood inserts
Six to eight hour burns out of a fireplace that used to burn through a load in ninety minutes. Cast iron and steel bodies, big glass, and blowers if you want to push the heat further into the room.
- Turns a heat loss into a heat source
- Works when the power is out
- Fits most standard masonry openings
Gas inserts
Direct vent, sealed, and controlled from a wall switch or a remote. The flue gets a liner, the gas line gets run, and you are done fussing with wood.
- Instant on and off
- Variable heat output
- Standing pilot means heat during an outage
- No ash, no hauling
Pellet inserts
A hopper, an auger and a steady flame. One load a day for most people, and the cleanest burn of anything that uses solid fuel.
- Very low smoke
- Thermostat control
- Pellets store in bags in the garage
Why we always reline
A stainless liner sized to the appliance, run top to bottom, insulated where the code and the chimney call for it. It is most of the labor on an insert job and it is the reason the unit will draft correctly for the next twenty years.
