Stoves
A freestanding stove puts the heat where the room needs it instead of where the builder put the chimney.
A wood burning stove lets air combine with the wood slowly. That keeps the fire controlled and makes it last six to eight hours, building heat inside the firebox. The mass of cast iron, steel or soapstone soaks that heat up and radiates it back into the house long after the flames have settled.
An open fireplace does the opposite. It burns so fast that most of the heat goes straight up the chimney, and while it does that it pulls warm air out of the rest of the house to feed itself. That is the whole difference, and it is why we sell what we sell.

What the differences actually mean
Wood
Cast iron, steel or soapstone. Load it, set the air, and let it work. Every wood stove we carry is EPA approved and clean burning.
- Uses less wood than an open fireplace
- Soothing radiant heat
- Helps control home heating bills
- Still works when the power is out
- Renewable fuel you can buy locally
- Sized for anything from one room to a whole house
Direct vent gas
Takes combustion air from outside and sends flue gases back outside. A sealed, balanced system that does not touch the air in your room. Vents vertically through the roof or horizontally out a wall, so it can go where a chimney cannot.
- No chimney required
- Often A.F.U.E. rated, so the efficiency is a published number
- Instant on, instant off, variable heat
- Runs on a standing pilot when the power is out
Pellet
Burns compressed wood pellets fed from a hopper, so the flame stays constant with almost no fiddling. Generally one load a day, depending on the hopper size.
- Easy to operate
- Minimal smoke
- Small clearances to combustibles
- Can vent horizontally
Vent-free gas
No chimney, no flue, no duct. Cheaper to install and effective for a single room. There are real health and safety considerations, and some towns and counties have rules about where these can go. We will walk you through both before you buy one.
- Lowest installed cost
- Single-room heating only
- Ask us about the code before you commit
